ニュージーランド全土にわたって分布。ニンフの特徴は、なんと言ってもそのギル。分厚く堅そうな鰓は、他のメイフライニンフと違って動かないため、流れのあるところでしか呼吸ができない。石底の瀬に好んで住む。
１１月から夏の中盤にかけて、ぽつぽつとハッチする。２月下旬にはハッチは殆ど無くなる。ダンは、翅の付け根が黄色く目立つのですぐに分かる。
ハッチの仕方は、石などに攀じ登り、水面から上に２センチほどのところで羽化するクライム型。しかしその石に至るのに、「水底を這い歩く」C1、「自由ルートで泳ぐ」C2、「一端水面まで泳ぐ」C3のどれなのかは不明。

Nymph can be found all over New Zealand. It is easy to recognise by its gills. They are thick and hard. Coloburiscus is the only mayfly in New Zeland which can not move its gills. Therefore it can only inhabit where water flows.
It hatches from mid November to mid summer, and around the end of February it die down. Dun has conspicuous yellow spots at the base of wings.
It climbs up a rock and goes up about 2 cm above the water surface to hatch. However, whether it crawls or swims to a rock is unknown.
